Hello & welcome to Animal-Welfare!!
At this club, we stand up for animals (which obviously can't stand up for themselves).
Like yourself, animals are capable of pain, suffering and have interests in leading their own lives; thus they are
not ours to use for
clothing, entertainment, experimentation, etc. Many people are against eating animals as well, which is great because you are then standing up for
animal rights. People in this club can still eat meat if they choose to. Some may say this is a contradiction, but no, not at all.
This club supports
animal welfare; which means we stand up for the things listed above, but some of us eat meat; some of us see it as a "trade off" or something that should be done.
I wouldn't think that eating meat would make you a bad person, or that this club would be pointless. Just because one eats meat, it does not mean that testing on animals, killing more animals for fur or skin, using them for entertainment purposes, etc. should be accepted as well.

Many people see nothing wrong with the things that we are against:
Some Examples:
"We need to test on animals before humans so we can see if it will kill us" --
Umm..if you haven't noticed, humans and animals do not have the same systems. Something that may harm an animal may have a different effect on a human.
"I want a fur coat. It will look good on me and keep me warm. Skins make lovely purses and wallets as well" --
Ever thought that an animal would have a fur coat to keep them warm too? If you must wear fur and skins, can't they be faux? There are other things that will keep you just as warm as fur.
"The circus and zoo - what's so bad about those places? They teach us about animals" --
Not exactly. In circuses, animals are made to perform in conditions much unlike their own habitat (im quite sure that a monkey in the wild does not wear a pink dress everyday...) And zoos - they claim to educate people, but if animals are kept in small enclosures, how can you truly see what they're really like?
" If eating meat is allowed and seen as a trade off, then why can't any of these other things be seen as a trade off?" --
Simple: the other things are not necessary--eating meat isn't either, but out of those things, meat has worked its way into everyday life. When animals are killed, the intention should be to eat them because of the good things it can do for us. Yes, meat can be fatty and 'kill us' but people need to see that only certain things can take the place of meat. The fur or leather that you see can not be taken from the same animals that we killed for meat, which now means that more animals need to be killed. You don't need to go to the circus or zoo! Want to learn about an animal, read a book.
